A measurement of the muon-induced neutron yield in lead at a depth of 2850 m water equivalent

چکیده
We present results from the measurement of the neutron production rate in lead by high energy cosmic-ray muons at a depth of 2850 m water equivalent (mean muon energy of 260 GeV). A tonne-scale highly segmented plastic scintillator detector was utilised to detect both the energy depositions from the traversing muons as well as the delayed radiative capture signals of the induced neutrons. Complementary Monte Carlo simulations reproduce well the distributions of muons and detected muon-induced neutrons. Absolute agreement between simulation and data is of the order of 25%. By comparing the measured and simulated neutron capture rates a neutron yield in pure lead of (5.78+0.21 −0.28) × 10 −3 neutrons/muon/(g/cm2) has been obtained.

A Neutron Multiplicity Meter for Deep Underground Muon-Induced High Energy Neutron Measurements
We present, for the first time, the design of an instrument capable of measuring the high energy (>60MeV) muon-induced neutron flux deep underground. The instrument is based on applying the Gd-loaded liquid-scintillator technique to measure the rate of multiple low energy neutron events produced in a Pb target and from this measurement to infer the rate of high energy neutron events. This uniqu...

Introduction: One of scientific concern is increasing of unwanted neutron dose to the patient, in head and neck radiation therapy due to the presence of some isotopes in dental restorations and head of medical linac. The aim of this study is to measure the equivalent dose of thermal and fast neutron due to head of Siemens Primus Linac and a healthy tooth, Amalgam, Ni-Cr alloy a...
متن کاملCosmogenic Backgrounds in Borexino at 3800 m water - equivalent depth
The solar neutrino experiment Borexino, which is located in the Gran Sasso underground laboratories, is in a unique position to study muon-induced backgrounds in an organic liquid scintillator. In this study, a large sample of cosmic muons is identified and tracked by a muon veto detector external to the liquid scintillator, and by the specific light patterns observed when muons cross the scint...
